I. Issuing New Passport To Vietnamese Citizens Resident In The United States
Vietnamese citizens residing in the United States have never had a Vietnam passport can go directly to the consulate or by post to get a passport. The necessary documents include:
- Passport declaration form
- 03 passport-sized photos
- Curriculum vitae (form M.01/LS)
- Copies of documents issued by the US Department of Immigration to prove that the applicant is residing in the United States (green card, US passport, etc.).
- Copies of papers to prove or serve as a basis for identifying applicants with Vietnamese nationalities, such as birth certificates, certificates of Vietnamese nationality, identity cards, or citizen registration papers. Particularly for children who are children of two Vietnamese citizens, born in the United States, they do not need to submit curriculum vitae.
- Copy of Birth Certificate (issued by Vietnamese agencies) for children under 14 years old who wish to share their passport with parents. General or private passport for children under 14 years old will only be valid for a maximum of 5 years and a minimum of 2 years or valid until the time the child turns 14 years old.
- Fees: Pay by MONEY or CASHIER’S CHECK to CONSULATE OF VIETNAM.
- A pre-paid envelope for the service with a tracking number such as Express Mail (USPS) or USPS Priority with confirmation delivery, certified mail or FEDEX specified the recipient’s address for the consulate to return by post.
For the security of your documents, please DO NOT use other mail delivery services.
After receiving all the documents, the Embassy must send information back to the country to verify it, so it usually takes a few months to issue a new passport.
II- Changing Or Adding Information In Passport For Vietnamese Citizens Resident In The United States
Vietnamese citizens residing in the United States can come to the consulate directly or by post to apply for a passport that is valid for longer than one month or still valid but out of pages for use or for other reasons. The necessary documents include:
- The application form for renewing passport
- 02 passport-sized photos
- Old passport: 01 original and 01 photocopy without notarization (only taking pages with personal details, passport number, date of issue, issuing agency, visa entry page to the US).
- Copies of legal documents proving that the old passports are in error and need to be amended and supplemented (birth certificates, ID cards, decisions of competent Vietnamese agencies on changing name, gender).
- Photocopy of documents proving the applicant is residing in the United States issued by the US Department of Immigration (such as green card, US passport, etc.).
- Fees: Pay by MONEY or CASHIER’S CHECK to CONSULATE OF VIETNAM.
- A pre-paid envelope for a service with a tracking number and specify the recipient’s address for the Embassy to return the result by post.
III. Renewing Passport To Vietnamese Citizens Resident In The United States
Vietnamese citizens residing in the United States can come to the consulate directly or by post to apply for a passport that is still valid for less than 30 days or expired lost or damaged.
The necessary documents include:
- The application for passport renewal
- 02 passport-sized photos
- Old passport: 01 original and 01 photocopy without notarization
- Photocopy of documents proving the applicant is residing in the United States, issued by the US Department of Immigration (such as green card, foreign passport, etc.)
- A pre-paid envelope for a service with a tracking number and specify the recipient’s address, if you want to receive the results by post.
- In the case of a lost passport, including the name and photo of the child, the parent must indicate in a separate report for the child.
Note:
1) An incomplete declaration or failure to follow instructions will be returned.
2) For children under 14 years of age:
- Children under 14 years old may be granted a separate passport or shared passport with their parents. Only provide passports to those children when they are determined to have Vietnamese nationality.
- Dossier of application for passport and photo as prescribed above need to submit additional expired passport of the child or 01 copy of the birth certificate, clearly identifying the Vietnamese nationality of the child. In case the birth certificate does not clearly show Vietnamese nationality, it must be enclosed with papers proving Vietnamese nationality of this child; In cases the child is an adopted one, an additional copy of the decision to recognize the adoption must be submitted.
- The declaration must be signed by the parent or guardian.
